DVLA penalty power grows

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will have more power to crack down on foreign-registered drivers who avoid paying traffic penalties, the Government has announced.

The Local Transport Bill includes a provision for the DVLA to be able to retrieve data from their foreign counterparts and share it with UK local authorities.

The SPARKS programme, a partnership of London’s traffic enforcement agencies, had called for the new powers to be introduced to enable local authorities to identify and trace owners of foreign-registered vehicles that flout traffic laws.
