Cyclists could secure tram operator support

Proposals to make 800 bicycles available in Edinburgh city centre for people to hire, as part of a bicycle station scheme, have been explored in a feasibility study.

The initiative would see bikes available from secure docking stations and would initially focus on the tram routes. Tram operator TEL had been asked to consider the provision of cycle storage on trams and responded that it might be willing to accommodate some bike carriage at certain times.

Eventually, at least 2,500 bikes would be in operation, city-wide. While the feasibility study shows there is an appetite for bike-sharing, the council would need to find a significant amount of capital funding, in the region of £2.8M, to implement the scheme on a city-wide basis.

Marshall Poulton, head of transport at City of Edinburgh Council, said the next stage of work would look at how such a scheme would be implemented. This could include looking to successful equivalents in Europe and formulating proposals for potential funding streams. The siting of bicycle stations will also require careful consideration of planning, parking and streetscape issues.
