Cycle route weighs heavy on freighters

 
Freight delivery on the first cycling superhighway in London has suffered from a lack of consultation and is a ‘major issue’, according to the Freight Transport Association (FTA).

Gordon Telling, head of policy at the FTA, criticised planning of the route at the Logistics Countdown to 2012 conference in London.

The first superhighway to be constructed will stretch from South Wimbledon to Bank via the A24 and A3. It will allow for a continuous, exclusive, blue-painted road space for cyclists, with curb-side vehicle stopping outlawed.

Mr Telling said the lessons of the red route hadn’t been learned by Transport for London (TfL), and it needed to look at freight servicing ‘sensitive premises’ throughout the cycling pathway. He said: ‘There has been no consultation. There needs to be more thinking within TfL in the future with regard to not allowing vehicles to stop on the cycle route.’
