Criminals put in the picture

CCTV is to be fitted in bus shelters as part of a scheme to boost safety and crack down on anti-social behaviour in Greater Manchester.

The initiative, by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, will cost £60,000 and target the worst-affected shelters in the region, with up to eight cameras installed in each. The idea is that CCTV images would be used to prosecute people for offences ranging from criminal damage to assault. GMPTE’s strategy director, Keith Howcroft, said: ‘We are currently deciding which bus shelters are in the most need of CCTV, and will be fitting cameras in the next few weeks.’
