Crime cut hinges on covers

Surrey County Council is to investigate installing a new type of hinged drain cover, to tackle a recent rise in thefts.

The county council has spent more than £53,000 replacing stolen ones in less than four months, and hopes a hinged drain cover attached to the base will be harder to remove.

Increasing prices of scrap metal following a building boom in India and the Far East could have triggered the spate of thefts, the council believes.

While the cost of repair is approximately £200 each time, the scrap metal value the drains are sold on for is often much lower.
