Crews brought together under one ‘green’ roof

Kent Highways Services has opened the doors to its £9.7M ‘environmentally-friendly’ depot, aimed at delivering a more efficient and joined-up service.

The flagship building has been designed to offer better value for money than existing depots by reducing the time it takes to carry out repairs.

For the first time, staff from KHS and other partners within the Kent Highways Alliance will work under the same roof.

This will improve communication between teams and reduce the time it takes to plan, co-ordinate and carry out projects. The new depot offers flexible working for road crews, inspectors and office staff with wi-fi throughout and meeting rooms that can be separated or merged to create the required size.

Environmentally-friendly technology has been applied throughout the building, the car park is constructed from recycled plastic and glass, and an underground storage tank will collect rainwater which will be used to fill gully-cleaning vehicles.

Keith Ferrin, Kent County Council cabinet member for highways, said: ‘We will start to see a real difference in the way we work very quickly, and the self-sufficiency of this building will bring long-term benefits by reducing our overall running costs.’
