Cracking down on street artists, with Dacorum

Dacorum Borough Council in Hertfordshire has launched a number of initiatives to crack down on environmental eyesores, such as fly-tipping and graffiti.
Through the use of surveillance cameras and car cams in fly-tip hotspots, Operation Tip Stop has led to 12 fixed-penalty notices and ongoing prosecutions since its inception in spring 2006.
Operation Commercial Yard Clean Up, another initiative under the council’s Enforcement Unit, targets unkempt service yards to assess their agreements for waste collection/containers. This has resulted in a reduction in vermin cases and arson threats in service yards since September 2005.
‘We have also clamped-down on graffiti and flyposting by introducing a further two, hard-hitting initiatives to remove the visions of urban decay,’ said Ben Stevens, the council’s enforcement officer.
