Crackdown on potholes after residents have their fill

West Sussex County Council has launched a £300,000 crackdown on potholes, to tackle a backlog of weather-related repairs.

The authority is responding after residents reported a sharp increase in the number of potholes over the winter months, which the council blamed on cold snaps following long periods of rain. It has already dedicated ‘find and fix’ pothole patrols, and operates a telephone and website-reporting service for residents.

The extra investment, to fix ‘thousands of extra potholes’ over the next 12 months, will see the council set up an extra gang, to fill about 4,500 additional holes.

Clive Roberts, cabinet member for roads and transport, said: ‘Potholes caused by either the weather or just sheer wear and tear are a fact of life for every highway authority. In extreme cases they can put both drivers and pedestrians at risk.
