Crack sinks ‘squinty’ hopes

Glasgow’s so-called ‘squinty’ bridge is to be closed for up to six months after engineers discovered a crack in a connection to another of its 14 steel hangers.

The bridge was closed earlier in January (Surveyor 17 January 2008), after one of its cables snapped and fell to the deck.

Following inspection of all similar components on the Clyde Arc bridge last week, a crack was found in another similar connector on a different hanger. It was unclear what impact a second failure would have on the bridge, Glasgow City Council said.
