Coventry shows its mettle with plans for Ironmonger Square

Coventry City Council is developing a £4M scheme to create a new pedestrianised square in the heart of the city.
A new, so-called Ironmonger Square could be developed in the Burges by closing Ironmonger Way to traffic and pedestrianising Cross Cheaping. Footpaths along the Burges will be improved and streetlighting and CCTV upgraded in the area, with new trees planted and public street art introduced. Cafes and restaurants will be encouraged to open around the new development.
Cllr Kevin Foster, cabinet member for city services, said: ‘For many years, the Burges has been neglected, and we have pledged as a council to do something about it. These plans would see the Burges given a radical facelift as well as provide a new open space.’
Work on the square could start in early summer or late autumn. Bendi-buses will be used to trial new routes around the area once streets have been pedestrianised.
