Coventry centre will put motorists in the picture

The Coventry Traffic Management Centre (CTMC) is to open next year, allowing traffic controllers to monitor traffic movement by using up to 52 CCTV cameras that will link up with regional systems.

The plan was given the go ahead by councillors on Tuesday (23 October) and will also see the introduction of variable messaging – providing information on parking and journey times to motorists and prioritising bus movements.

Councillor Hazel Noonan, cabinet member for city services, said: ‘When fully operational, the traffic controllers will be in a position to identify traffic build-up and counteract congestion by diverting traffic through different routes.’

It is hoped the introduction of the UTMC will encourage more use of public transport in Coventry to improve the movement of traffic on the busy road networks.
