County’s pupil travel initiative is a lesson to the rest

Norfolk has become the first county in England where every school has rolled out travel plans.

All 474 schools – including private institutions – are now actively promoting ‘greener’ and safer travel to and from school. Achieving 100% coverage is the result of five years’ work between the county council’s Travel Plan team and Norfolk schools.

Only Thurrock and Southend, with a fraction of the number of schools as Norfolk, have also reached 100%. Adrian Gunson, cabinet member for planning and transportation, said: ‘When one takes account of the new plans that have had to be produced for reorganised schools, the travel plan team has been involved in the production of almost 500.

‘It is a feather in the cap to be the first county to have a complete and signed travel plan for every school but, of course, what is really important is the action that follows. Some schools have seen remarkable changes in the way children arrive at school.’

At Heacham Infant School, for example, car use has dropped by almost one-quarter since it produced its first travel plan in 2004. The school has used a variety of campaigns, including a walking bus for some time, and now makes use of a local pub car park to encourage ‘park and stride’.
