Countys bag PFI cash to upgrade lights

Northamptonshire and Cambridgeshire county councils are to benefit from £145.8M in private-finance initiative investment to upgrade streetlights, the Government has announced.

The funding will allow the two councils to secure sector partners in a joint project to upgrade 98,000 streetlights over the next 25 years and install almost 14,000 new lighting columns. Northamptonshire will gain 13,000 of the new columns, and 54,000 of the upgrades.

Local transport minister, Rosie Winterton, said: ‘Experience shows that better streetlighting helps improve road safety, as well as reducing crime and the fear of crime.

‘It is also helps create happier and healthier communities by promoting social inclusion and more sustainable patterns of transport.’

The next stage in the process is for the councils to discuss with potential partners how the work will be undertaken.
