County steps in to safeguard service

Nottinghamshire County Council is helping keep a Newark bus route running, after a local operator was set to axe the service due to restricted access.

The council acted after local residents requested the 33 route to Fernwood at Balderton be saved, after a developer decided to refuse open access for buses through the Lakeside Park and Manners Road Estates.

Marshall Coaches had planned to end the route as a result of the decision before the local authority waded in with financial support.

Cllr Stella Smedley, cabinet member for transport and highways, said: ‘I am hopeful that further discussions with the developer will allow the service on to the estate, as residents have requested, so I have approved financial support for the service to keep it running as far as the end of the estate, in the short term.’
