County signs are limit for protest group

Signs welcoming drivers into Bedfordshire as they leave Luton have been removed by a group, saying they wish to maintain the integrity of the county.

CountyWatch removed three signs from around the town and moved one to the original border of the county.

Tony Bennett, co-founder of CountyWatch, said the group moved the sign ‘because it is ridiculous having a sign welcoming someone to Bedfordshire when they are already in the middle of the county’.

He continued: ‘Many county boundaries have been in place for hundreds of years. William the Conqueror came here and left them in place, but now it seems they could be lost to bureaucracy.’

The group has removed and moved signs from various counties across the UK, and its members say they have a legal right to do so under Section 131 of the Highways Act 1980, because ‘they misinform the public’.

Cllr Tom Wootton, Cabinet member for highways at Bedfordshire, said: ‘This is crazy. We’re proud of our county and we like to ensure visitors are given a warm welcome.

‘I’m not sure if Mr Bennett bothered to contact us before he took this action, but he should be made aware that for the last 10 years, Luton has had responsibility for all of its services. The signs on the edge of Luton mark the boundaries of its responsibilities and the beginnings of ours.

‘I hope Mr Bennett will come to his senses and return the signs to the county council as soon as possible.’
