County signs 28-year deal centred on MBT

Cambridgeshire County Council has signed a £730M waste contract centred on a state-of-the-art mechanical biological treatment (MBT) plant.

The council this week signed the 28-year contract with local company Donarbon Waste Management, and received £35M in government PFI credits to help pay for the scheme. Additional facilities for the composting of kerbside-collected good and garden waste will also be provided under the contract.

Construction of the MBT plant will now begin at Donarbon’s existing waste management park located off the A10, between Waterbeach and Chittering. Cambridgeshire is on track to exceed its 50% recycling target for 2007-08, but still has to spend £7M each year landfilling unrecycable waste, with the figure set to rise by another £1M in 2008-09, due to landfill tax increases.

Cllr John Reynolds said: ‘Helping to secure a greener future for our children and grandchildren has always been at the heart of this contract. We are very pleased to have laid the foundations for managing Cambridgeshire’s waste over the next 28 years.’
