County seeks joint route to expertise

Hampshire County Council is to begin tendering a regional civil engineering professional services framework as part of a move to encourage more local authorities to join forces and ensure they get the best deal for highways-related projects.

The framework will enable councils which sign up to the network of approved firms to gain greater value for money on technical consultancy for projects such as park-and-ride schemes, road and infrastructure improvements, and refurbishments of city centre pedestrian zones.

Leader of Hampshire , Ken Thornber, said: ‘Although much of the key work on civil engineering projects is carried out in-house, consultants have an important role to play in providing specialism and adding capacity to deliver one-off projects.

‘This framework will help provide consistency as well as streamlining and standardisation of contracts, eliminating the risk of any patchwork effect of works.’

The framework will replace the current arrangements for Hampshire County Council supplied by consultant Mott Gifford, which expire in March 2010.
