County pioneers big switch to save energy

A total of 287 streetlights on seven rural and semi-rural sites in Buckinghamshire are being replaced with environmentally-friendly alternatives, in the first phase of a ‘pioneering’ initiative.

It is estimated that the first phase of the trial will save £15,000 a year in energy costs alone, and carbon emissions savings of 90t of CO2. Following the first phase, a wider programme of switching off a further 1,700 streetlights will be rolled out, with an ultimate saving of £100,000 a year.

In environmental terms, this represents a 10% saving of total carbon emissions, at 590t of CO2. The county’s cabinet member for transport, Val Letheren, said: ‘This is a trial, and after three years, we can take an objective view of the scheme and consider our options.’
