County increases highways repair spending by a fifth

Hertfordshire County Council has increased its annual spend on highway maintenance by £10M following 'overwhelming feedback' from residents that the service is a top priority.
Cllr Stuart Pile, executive member for highways, said that 'although we already spend over £50M on maintenance, Hertfordshire' s network is one of the most heavily used in England. Simply trying to keep roads in their current state absorbs a large chunk of that money.'
Following the injection for 2006/06, the county council would consider ways to invest further money in future years.
