County county steps in to safeguard services

West Sussex County Council is to step in and restore four services, in the Horsham area, which went off the road earlier this week when a bus company ceased trading.

The decision to subsidise new operators to take over the weekday services was taken last week by Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, West Sussex cabinet member for highways and transport.

The services stopped when Goring-based bus company Palaeobus, which ran the services on a commercial basis, suddenly ceased trading. The four services carry up to 300 children a day to and from three secondary schools in Horsham. The services are also used by the public for a variety of local journeys.

Pemberton said: ‘Final details and costings are still taking place, but we have already started talking with other operators and I am confident these buses will be back on the road on Tuesday.’
