The deputy chief executive of Cambridgeshire County Council took on the president role at the CSS general meeting last Friday.

Smith has been a member of the CSS, which represents local authority chief officers on key issues like highways, waste and transport, for 12 years. During this time, he chaired the National Travelwise Association and the CSS Transport Committee, shaping what is now the Traffic Management Act.

He has also chaired the Government’s network management board for the last three years, and was vice president of the CSS in the two years prior to taking the presidency. Alison Quant, Hampshire County Council’s director of environment, is the new vice president.
