County beats off rivals to become transport local authority of the year

Buckinghamshire County Council was named transport local authority of the year 2008 at the recent local transport awards.

It beat off competition from Kent County Council and Essex County Council to win the award, and also received the cycling improvements award in recognition of the Aylesbury Cycle Demonstration Town project.

Only six years ago, it was a two-star transport authority.

Valerie Letheren, cabinet member for transportation at Buckinghamshire, said: ‘This is excellent news for everyone in transportation. It has been a real team effort. We have a service of dedicated officers who deal with all highway and transportation issues, from transport policy and sustainable travel, to frontline services such as highway maintenance and casualty reduction.’
