Counties vote to ban lorries in New Forest area

HGVs will be banned from roads within the northern part of the New Forest, under a joint project by Hampshire and Wiltshire county councils.
The project, which comes into effect in March, aims to reduce the amount of HGVs by 18-27% across the entire region. A Traffic Regulation Order will prohibit goods vehicles with a gross weight exceeding 7.5t from proceeding in any roads within the zone, except for loading and unloading purposes.
Executive member for environment, Councillor Mel Kendal, said: ‘Residents of villages in the northern parts of the New Forest have long expressed concern about the volume of HGVs travelling through the villages, namely Godshill (B3078), Hale (B3080) and Brook (B3079). ‘The order will also have a positive impact on the wellbeing of the communities situated within the zone, and also, the many visitors to the New Forest National Park, by reducing traffic noise and pollution, road wear and verge damage.’
