More local authorities are being urged to participate in the second phase of a carbon trading scheme, ahead of the introduction of the Government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment in April.
The CRC will be a mandatory ‘cap and trade’ scheme for the public and private sectors, and a number of local authorities will be included in the scheme – depending on the amount of energy they use.
In light of the CRC, the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) is calling on more councils to participate in the second phases of its Carbon Trading Councils scheme, which helps them prepare for the CRC scheme.
Since the launch in April 2008, 34 local authorities have taken part in Carbon Trading Councils. The deadline for councils to sign up to the second phase is 15 March.
