Councils to get powers to tackle ‘inconsiderate’ motorists

Plans to help councils tackle inconsiderate parking, by issuing penalty-charge notices to motorists who park at dropped footways or double-park, have been outlined in a consultation.

The consultation, published by the Department for Transport this week, aims to make powers introduced in a new parking framework in March more effective.

The framework gave councils in England the power to issue penalty-charge notices for specific offences where motorists were parking on dropped kerbs or more than 50cm from the kerb – a tool authorities in London have been using for years.

By allowing authorities outside the capital to enforce these specific offences without having to use traffic signs or road markings, the DfT hopes to make the power more effective.

Transport minister,
Rosie Winterton, said: ‘While we believe signs and markings are not necessary in these specific and restricted circumstances, we expect local authorities which want to use these powers to publicise their plans to do so’. The change is expected to come into force next spring.
