Councils meet across Thames to consider third crossing

Essex and Kent county councils are to conduct a detailed feasibility study into constructing a Lower Thames crossing to provide ‘urgent’ transport relief for the Southeast.

After waiting almost 18 months for a promised government feasibility study, Kent and Essex leaders said they would press ahead with one of their own. County council officers will engage engineers and specialists to come up with options for a third Thames crossing east of Dartford.

Paul Carter, leader of KCC, said: ‘The economy in the Southeast is the bread basket of the UK. ‘Massive housing growth is being demanded by central government and road freight growth is increasing by 8% a year, and projected to continue.

‘If we are to avoid gridlock, we must plan ahead. We are in need of Victorian vision. We are working in partnership with Essex to come up with solutions.’

The feasibility study follows on from an announcement from Kent and Essex county councils in 2006 that they would be looking at the possibility of a crossing. A spokesperson for the Department for Transport said an announcement would be made shortly on its feasibility study into the possibility of a new crossing.
