Councils aim to ease load for lorries

A partnership of the five local authorities of Tyne and Wear is set to draw up a plan for improving the movement of lorries in the conurbation.

The freight partnership will, over the next few months, tackle two key areas: drawing up recommended routes for freight transport and promoting them; and ensuring informative, clear road signs are in place for HGV drivers – possibly, in the longer-term, in other languages. Consultant Faber Maunsell is working with Newcastle, Gateshead, South and North Tyneside, and Sunderland councils to produce the freight action plan, in consultation with road hauliers.
