Council works flat out to raise household recovery rates

Gateshead Council’s high-rise recycling scheme has seen an 84% uptake among flat-residing locals since its launch in February.
A poll of 2,600 residents found the vast majority were now using recycling bins, with 82% fairly or very satisfied with the service. The council is now collecting around three tonnes each week as a result of the scheme.
Previously, people living in flats were only able to recycle by taking their waste to specially-designated sites.
Fiona Brown, Gateshead’s director of local environmental services, said: ‘The high-rise scheme has really taken off and we are hoping it will help the council divert an extra 300t of waste a year from landfill.’
Under the scheme, six black recycling bins were placed at the entrance area of all Gateshead Housing Company’s properties or in the bin stores of privately-owned flats. Residents were also issued with an individual blue recycling bag in which to store the relevant materials before taking them to the main black bins.
