Council seeks inspiration to deal with waste

Gloucestershire County Council is inviting bidders to come up with the most cost-effective and ‘environmentally-friendly’ solution for dealing with the county’s waste.

The authority has drawn up a shopping list of what it needs to hit landfill targets, while keeping an open mind about the type of technology which would be required.

Cllr Stan Waddington, cabinet member for the environment, said: ‘We have now completed a careful analysis of all the waste technologies currently on the market and, with the information we have, we believe the most sensible approach is to put together a list of requirements which we need the technologies to meet and ask the bidders to submit a proposal to meet these.

‘What we’re saying is, we want Gloucestershire’s waste to be disposed of safely, environmentally and with as little cost to Gloucestershire taxpayers as possible – and we don’t mind what technology is used to do it.’

The council rejected claims it was backtracking from the suggestion it would make a decision on its preferred technology next week. ‘We always knew it would be a long process to get this right, and we have always said we would take as much time as we needed without rushing such an important decision,’ said Waddington. Five technology options were agreed by the cabinet in October.

These options are modern thermal treatment (MTT), advanced thermal treatment (ATT – also known as gasification and pyrolysis), autoclave, and two versions of mechanical/biological treatment (MBT).
