Council officers hail taxi-texting service

A rural Welsh council hopes to make savings by introducing texting for taxi quotes.

Transport officers at Pembrokeshire CC currently phone taxi operators twice a day, on average, to obtain quotes for short-notice transport for social-services clients.

The planned new software will send text messages to all participating taxi operators in the relevant area, which will submit their prices by text.

Officers could then make the booking by text, with the entire process requiring less officer time than multiple phone calls.

Brendan Griffiths, Pembrokeshire’s statutory transport officer, said: ‘Texting is much cheaper. Also, we’ll get a larger number of people tendering for each run, so it will increase competition.’

Officers aim to launch the new system by the end of the year.
