Council hitch over Stagecoach route

A Welsh council cannot restore buses to Cardiff from some of its communities because Stagecoach still operates truncated commercial services locally.

Last autumn Stagecoach said improved rail services had abstracted passengers from its X38 Bargoed-Cardiff route, which it terminated at Pontypridd. Caerphilly Council and the Welsh Assembly’s petitions committee received complaints that non-rail-served communities were left without public transport to Cardiff. The Welsh Assembly Government said it was a council matter.

Huw Morgan, Caerphilly council’s principal passenger transport officer, said: ‘Stagecoach has confirmed it would cost more than £100,000 per annum to reinstate the previous level of service. To meet these costs, the council would have to make significant cuts to other established subsidised bus services.’
