Council efficiency savings ‘can only be met from cuts’

Delivering efficiency savings in the current economic climate will result in councils having to cut services, according to private-finance initiative experts.

Research, carried for 4Ps, the group charged with looking at PFI and PPP funding for councils, said 50% of local authorities were concerned about rising costs for providing waste-management services, almost one in five organisations were concerned about rising costs for corporate services, and 10% highlighted concerns about increasing public transport costs.

More than half of local authorities said they would cut staff recruitment and new buildings and facilities, if savings needed to be made because of the financial downturn. Half said they would cut sport and leisure services, and 49% would reduce community grants.
