Council could sell off Bus service

Plymouth City Council is considering its options over ownership of its bus company.

A report to the council’s cabinet recommends that it make shares in Plymouth CityBus, one of the last remaining council owned bus companies, available for sale, in order to value the firm and see how much interest it receives on the open market.

Council leader, Vivien Pengelly, said: ‘Running a bus company is not core council business and we are one of the few councils left in the country to still own one. Just because we’ve always done something one way, doesn’t mean that we should continue. Most councils took the decision to sell their companies years ago.’

Any decision made by the council will be subject to the full scrutiny process, but the company could be offered for sale by this autumn.
