Council backs intelligent move for disposal

Cumbria has moved towards a 25-year deal to use new technology to deal with the county’s domestic waste.
A full meeting of Cumbria County Council in Kendal at the end of last week agreed to make Shanks Waste Management the preferred bidder for the £400M deal.
Shanks will use its intelligent transfer system, based on mechanical biological treatment technology, which the authority describes as ‘new, modern and progressive’, and has been used effectively in Italy.
The county has been in the process of evaluating huge bids from both Shanks and Waste Recycling Group which offered a solution based on energy-from-waste technology. However, the council has opted not to go down the incinerator route and will now begin detailed contract talks with Shanks over what facilities will be required and where they might be sited.
Waste Recycling Group, which recently won Berkshire’s £600M RE3 waste scheme, will be invited to remain as reserve bidder.
Jack Richardson, cabinet spokesman on waste management, said: ‘We have made a good decision that shows real, progressive thinking. We will now work with Shanks to refine its proposals and develop the role of Cumbria Waste Management.’
