Council Acts After Bus Company Ceases Trading

West Sussex County Council has taken action after bus company Palaeobus took the decision to cease trading at the weekend.

Immediate arrangements were made to ensure that school transport contracts between the company and County Council in the Horsham and Steyning areas were covered by other operators.

This week, council cabinet member for highways and transport, Lt Col Tex Pemberton chaired a series of emergency meetings to look at other issues surrounding Palaeobus.

These include four peak time commercially run Palaeobus services in Horsham, which carry around 250-300 children a day to and from three secondary schools - Millais, The Forest and Tanbridge House.

Many parents have purchased season tickets from the company for their children who are not entitled to free school transport.

Pemberton said: 'It is the commercial routes that were being run by the company without any subsidy from the County Council that is giving cause for concern. This is not only having an impact on school journeys. The buses are also used by the public for a variety of travel needs.

'We are looking at various options and talking to other bus companies about these routes. These were commercial services being run by Palaeobus and not under contract to the County Council, but we will be doing all we can on behalf of the travelling public.'

Palaeobus also commercially operated Service 8 between Worthing and Ferring and this has already been taken over by Compass Travel following an arrangement with the county council.
