Cotswolds lorry ban fails to charm industry chiefs

Area-wide lorry bans for the Cotswolds have been attacked by freight operators as ‘utterly ridiculous’.

Gloucestershire County Council has proposed banning lorries on all roads in the Cotswolds area of outstanding natural beauty, except for the the A40 and A417. The council wants to prevent rat-run lorries taking shortcuts where there is a more suitable route. Deliveries and collections on other roads would be allowed ‘where necessary’, subject to negotiations with hauliers, said Cllr Stan Waddington, cabinet member for the environment. But the Freight Transport Association attacked the proposal as preventing essential deliveries, increasing already over-used routes, and going against local transport plan guidance to meet the needs of all road-users.
