Cornwall County Council has organised a more environmentally-friendly delivery of salt for its 875 miles of county roads.
Previously, up to 360 truck loads of salt had been driven from Cheshire, but this year it will arrive in just one shipload from Northern Ireland.
CORMAC, the council’s highway maintenance contractual arm, has purchased the salt from the Salt Sales Company of Kilroot Salt Mine, near Carrickfergus. It is being shipped to Fowey harbour, where it will be transported to highways depots by local haulers.
Tim Hack, supply manager for CORMAC, said salt would be driven from Salt Sales Company’s stockpile in Sharpness, near Bristol, in the event of a shortfall brought on by severe weather conditions – but was ‘confident’ such measures wouldn’t be necessary.
