Contract will cast certain areas of Nottingham in a new light

Nottingham City Council’s new streetlighting PFI contract will allow the council to add areas it does not currently light, such as unadopted streets, business parks and car parks at any time throughout the contract’s 25-year life.

Portfolio member for transport and area working, Jane Urquhart, told the regeneration and sustainability select committee that detailed work had been carried out on the city’s unadopted streets, and it is looking at criteria for bringing them up to standard.

Adding extra lights to the PFI contract would involve adjusting the unitary charge paid to the contractor. There would also be a facility for other services to use the contractor ad hoc works under a schedule of rates.

The PFI contract will involve replacing 24,000 lighting columns within the first five years, including all concrete, cast iron and older steel columns, replacing 5,000 footpath lights, upgrading 10,000 lanterns to white light, energy efficiency measures, instant dimming capabilities and maintenance. A target of 30% energy reduction and a carbon dioxide reduction of 3,051t will aim to contribute 17% of the city’s carbon reduction target.

Financial close is expected early next year.
