Construction of new lanes to widen M1 under way

Work got under way this week on the widening scheme for the M1 near Sheffield, between junctions 31 and 32.
The £20M, Highways Agency-funded scheme is intended to improve safety, reduce congestion and cut journey times on one of the route’s busiest sections in south Yorkshire.
Construction of the new lanes is expected to last for around 11 months, and will take place within the current boundaries of the carriageway.
To minimise disruption new electronic signs mounted on gantries over the carriageway are also being installed as part of the works.
During the daytime, three lanes are expected to be kept open at all times, with any closures being effected at night, when traffic flows are lower.
A 50mph speed limit will be enforced by speed cameras throughout the works. The work is part of a larger scheme to increase capacity along the length of the M1 and on the M62 in West Yorkshire, which involves further widening work and the introduction of a new, compact motorway design.
However, environmental groups Friends of the Earth and Road Block have both criticised the expansion.
