Consider alternatives to link road, ministers tell county

The Government has advised Devon County Council to consider a report drawn up by opponents of a £130M bypass proposal, detailing alternatives to tackling traffic.

The Kingskerswell Alliance against Devon’s South Devon link road claimed the local highway authority had ‘failed to offer any true alternative’ to the bypass proposal, submitted to the Department for Transport just before Christmas (Surveyor, 10 January 2008).

The scheme is designed to reduce congestion and improve road safety and air quality on a stretch of the A380. The Kingskerswell Alliance’s report, meanwhile, sets out an alternative, ‘enlightened approach’ to solving the same problems. It includes sustainable travel town-type measures including personal travel planning, and small-scale road improvements such as remodelling junctions.
