Conservation group urges manual work to protect historic streets

The English Historic Towns Forum has urged local authorities to apply Manual for streets principles to all roads, not just residential streets.

As it launched guidance suggesting ways traffic management schemes might protect or enhance historic character, the EHTF claimed that ‘many traffic management mistakes continue to be made’.

The Manual for historic streets advocates introducing informal crossings – citing evidence that they are safer than puffins, pelicans, toucans and zebras – and taking away ‘redundant’ signs on busy streets.

Surveyor revealed last week that Scotland’s answer to the Manual for streets would consider all roads (Surveyor, 15 May). : www.ehtf.org.uk
