Congestion charge fears for Manchester workers

Derbyshire’s director of environment is to raise concerns over the impact of Greater Manchester’s proposed congestion charge on the county’s residents.

Ian Stephenson wants ‘more information’ on how the plan for a two-cordon daily charge of up to £5 would affect residents of northwest Derbyshire, living in the Greater Manchester travel-to-work area.

He said it was ‘very positive’ that Mike Thompson, chair of the Greater Manchester Association of District Engineers, had agreed to a meeting next month.

Stephenson believes councils are required to consider the social impact of charging schemes on their own residents, but not those in neighbouring authorities.

But residents see Glossop and other areas in the district of High Peak ‘as a Manchester suburb’. ‘We want to ensure the potential impact is considered, and mitigated with transport alternatives,’ he said – possibly with improvements to local bus services.
