Community praise for ‘green’ outlook

The Local Government Association (LGA) has paid tribute to the commitment shown by environmentally friendly households after latest figures suggest more than £1bn worth of recycling has been collected since 2003.

According to Waste & Resources Action Programme (Wrap), the UK has sent nearly 34M tonnes of waste for recycling over the course of the past five years. ‘[This is] enough to cover an area the size of the city of London 40 times over in waste one metre deep,’ said Wrap chief executive Liz Goodwin.

The recycling of paper, glass, plastics, aluminium and steel currently saves more than 18M tonnes of carbon dioxide in the UK every year. Cllr Paul Bettison, chairman of the LGA environment board, said: ‘Local people deserve great credit for boosting this country’s recycling rates so dramatically in recent years. It’s more important than ever that people recycle as much as possible.’
