Communities to benefit from airport sale

West Yorkshire councils have pledged to invest their cash windfall from the sale of Leeds Bradford International Airport in local schemes, including highways maintenance and ‘community empowering’ projects.

Leeds City Council says a proportion of its £51M share would address the city’s backlog of highways repairs, and £13M has been earmarked for regeneration projects. Cllr Mark Harris, leader of Leeds City Council, said: ‘The state of the city’s roads has long been a cause for debate and the receipt will contribute to our £60M commitment to invest in highway refurbishment . Other projects include £13M investment on the regeneration of our towns and parks.’ Many of these projects would not have been delivered without the airport windfall, he added.

Bradford Metropolitan District Council will share £3M of its £51.5M with local councillors to spend on community projects. Under the plans, each of the 30 wards in the Bradford district will be allocated £100,000 to spend on projects chosen by their elected members. Cllr Mohammad Massod, executive member for corporate, said: ‘We envisage the money will be used for community projects which may have been overlooked under normal circumstances. This might be streetlighting, small park areas or improvements to community buildings.’

Money allocated would largely be from capital investments that would not need extra funding in the future. The council said it would allocate the rest of the windfall in October. Kirklees Council, which received ‘about £6M’ from the airport sale, said it would make a similar announcement in the autumn. The other two councils involved in the sale, Calderdale and Wakefield, also plan to invest the windfalls in their communities. Leeds Bradford International Airport was sold to Bridgepoint Capital in April for £145.5M.
