Commission under fire

 
Senior environmental European non-governmental organisations have written to European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, warning that the Commission was moving away from its past pro-public transport stance.
The Green-10 group, which includes Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace, claim that commitments to promote rail and shipping in the Commission’s 2001 transport white paper were being watered down in a current review. It complains that a review report recommends regional spending funds be spent on new roads to generate economic development, a ‘flawed’ strategy, given the high costs.
