Commission hopes to edge out gateway plan

Liverpool’s proposal to redevelop the Edge Lane gateway has been dismissed by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment.

CABE has concluded that the proposed scheme to widen the highway, demolish the existing buildings, and construct new housing at Edge Lane West would not achieve the objectives to improve the entrance route into Liverpool.

‘As it stands, we are unable to support this scheme and think this planning application should not be given consent,’ the commission said in a design review.

It claimed widening the highway was not the only way to enhance the journey into the city, and urged the council to explore all alternatives and, if it was considered the best option, put forward a convincing case for widening.
