Comment: Chancellor needs to follow his head not his heart

 

Stephen Joseph OBE on why the chancellor needs to move away from plans for a few big new schemes and toward on-going investment to mend and maintain our roads.

 

There is under a week to go before the Chancellor announces the outcomes of the Spending Round. Judging from a number of public speeches, his instinct is to try to use big transport projects, and roads in particular, to build his way out of a cycle of sluggish economic growth. But there are good reasons why the Chancellor must challenge his instincts.
