College will host research centre

The Department for Transport has announced a new scientific research centre to be based at London’s Imperial College, to help it work out both short-term policy issues and longer-term questions about transport infrastructure, the labour market and the economy.

The UK Transport Research Centre will also draw support from University College, London, and the University of Leeds, and will aim to provide an evidence base for the department’s decision-making.

Studies will include economic competitiveness, the environment, society, mobility and technology. Transport minister, Lord Adonis, said its research would be instrumental in ensuring Britain was at the forefront of new sustainable transport developments.

‘We are committed to delivering a first-class sustainable transport system in this country – but to do this, we need a first-class evidence base,’ he said.
