Coasting to legal action

A legal right of access to the coast has been called for.

Permission to walk on the 4,400km of coastline in England and Wales is in many cases only granted as permissive access. A quarter of Durham’s coast path and one tenth of the Southwest route are not legally secure and could be closed without notice.
Kate Ashbrook chairman of the Ramblers Association, said: ‘The public should have a legal right to enjoy our wonderful coastline.’
