Coastal protection: Scheme provides the perfect backdrop to enhance resort’s image

A £62M coastal defence scheme for Blackpool has become a popular piece of public art, after the council installed hoardings of photographs of the work by a local resident.
The pictures, taken by local photographer Paul Rogers, catalogue the £62M project to rebuild 3.2km of the central section of Blackpool’s Victorian seawall – to better protect some 1,500 properties – while rebuilding its promenade.
Rogers said: ‘These shots show how something seemingly mechanical and perfunctory can be beautiful.’
The coastal authority said that contractor Birse had not encountered serious difficulties since it started on site last autumn and was on track to complete the scheme by the end of 2009.
